It was a battle of the top two teams in the SMAAAHL Tuesday night at the Cooperators Centre, as the Regina Pat Canadians hosted the Swift Current Legionnaires. The two teams were tied at 32 points each in the league standings coming into the contest.
The Legionnaires would get on the board first at 5:45 of the first period as Jace Egland would go top corner on Taylor Tabashniuk to give his team the 1-0 lead.
Dayce Derkatch would get the Pat Canadians back in it with just over 1 minute left in the 1st for his 11th of the season and a 1-1 tie heading into the break.
Swift Current would jump back into the lead 2:29 into the 2nd period as Keegan Nash would find a loose puck and find the back of the net for his 2nd of the season, and a 2-1 lead for the visitors.
The Legionnaires would strike shortly after when Kayd Ruedig would find twine for goal number 10 on the year and increase his team’s lead to 3-1, with 14 minutes to go in the middle frame.
The puck would take a funny bounce and land on the stick of Triston Mitchell-Mcelhone, who would put it by Tabashniuk for his 5th this season, and a 4-1 Legionnaires lead heading into the second intermission.
Steven Steranka’s 23rd goal of the season would wow the crowd at Cooperators Centre as the ‘lacrosse style’ goal was executed to perfection. It would cut the Legionaire lead to 4-2.
Ryan Ulmer would then go top shelf on Weston for his 5th of the season just over 3 minutes later to cut into the Swift Current lead even more at 4-3.
However, at the 7:10 mark of the 3rd, Kade Stringer’s 10th of the campaign would increase the lead back to two for the visitors, making it 5-3.
The Regina captain, Casey Brown would squeak one through Weston for his 15th of the season, while also helping the C’s cut back into the Legionaire lead at 5-4, with just over 12 minutes remaining.
Michael Donovan would then go short-side on Weston to complete the comeback and tie things up at 5 at the 13:02 mark of the 3rd period for his 8th of the 23/24 season, and that would be how things would remain through 60 minutes and overtime.
Through the shootout Regina Taylor Tabashniuk stopped 3/4 Swift Current shooters, while Steven Steranka and Ellis Mieyette both scored to secure the 6-5 comeback win for the Pat Canadians.
With the win the C’s move to 17-6-0 on the season and also move into first place with 34 points.
They will return to action this weekend on Saturday @ 7:45 PM, and Sunday at @3:45 PM when the Saskatoon Blazers visit the Cooperators Centre.
