The Regina Pat Canadians kicked off their 2026-27 Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League season in style on Saturday night, defeating the Warman Wildcats 5-3 in their home opener at the Co-operators Centre. The victory marked the first step in the Pat Canadians’ quest to defend their SMAAAHL championship.
Regina controlled play from the opening faceoff, using a dominant first period to establish momentum. The Pat Canadians earned three power-play opportunities in the opening frame and capitalized twice with the man advantage.
The first goal came on a crisp three-way passing play, with Rylan Edwards finding Nathan Gardiner, who quickly set up Mahlon Wiley in front for the season’s opening goal. Later in the period, another power play paid dividends when Alan Han finished off a setup from Braxtyn Korol and Jett Donison to give the home side a 2-0 lead.
The Pat Canadians dictated the pace throughout the opening 20 minutes, outshooting Warman 14-2 and carrying a well-deserved two-goal advantage into the intermission.
The Wildcats responded early in the second period, scoring twice in quick succession to even the game at 2-2 and shift momentum.
Regina’s special teams answered once again.
With the power play clicking, Kai Lanigan restored the Pat Canadians’ lead midway through the period. Shortly afterwards, Logan Dosenberger notched his 1st of the year, showcasing his skill on a great individual rush, which saw him walk around a defender before beating Wildcats netminder Jacob Appleby with a smooth move to give Regina a 4-2 cushion.
Warman held a slight edge in shots during the middle frame, 11-10, but the Pat Canadians regained control on the scoreboard when it mattered most.
The third period was closely contested as both teams traded chances. Jett Donison extended Regina’s lead to 5-2, providing valuable insurance heading into the final minutes.
With the Wildcats pressing and their goaltender pulled for an extra attacker, Declan Borthwick scored with 1:49 remaining to bring Warman within two. However, the Pat Canadians closed out the game to secure a 5-3 opening-night victory.
Regina finished the night with a 33-27 advantage in shots on goal and converted on three of four power-play opportunities, a key factor in the win. The strong special teams performance and a balanced offensive attack provided an encouraging start for the defending league champions.
